Hello, my dear Friend!

How was your week? What good things did the Sun bring to you? Do you remember our Story about Letters and the Alphabet City? Well, get comfortable, and let us continue…

Chapter 2. The Vowel Street and The Consonant Blvd.

When the letters got to the center of the city, they saw a beautiful square filled with bright green grass and happy colorful flowers, large trees and unusual houses. There were only two streets in the city. One was very long, because it had a lot of houses, and the other - very short, because there were only a few houses there , although each house has a sign that read “Syllable” on it. The streets were called “Consonant boulevard ” and “The Vowel street”.

The letters started to select the houses they wanted to live in , and it so happened that almost everyone wanted to live on a short street. Then the Sun, who was following the Letters journey all this time, said:

“ Do you remember that only 5 letters - Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, Uu - got to the top of the mountain still signing their songs loudly? Since there are just a few of them, they will be living on a short street - the Vowel Street, and will be called Vowels. The rest of you will be living on the Consonant Boulevard and will be called consonants. Together, Vowels and Consonants make an Alphabet, and that is why this square is called the Alphabet City. So, go choose your own homes, and don’t argue any more : now you all belong to one big Alphabet family!”

“ Oh, I almost forgot! One more thing “, - said the Sun. “Remember that when you are all together, you need to walk in the same order as you were walking up the Knowledge Hill, when each of you received your own name and your own song. That is the order that can never be broken now “ , - smiled the Sun at the letters, turned around and started to slowly make its way towards the Knowledge Hill.

Our Letters looked at each other, smiled and started thinking about how they went up the mountains. Not a minute passed when they had it all figured out, and started to happily assemble their homes. Only Letter “Yy” was sad.

The Letter “Yy” didn’t want to live on the long street, because she really wanted to be with the letters from the short, Vowel Street  ( as she already made friends with an “Ii”, remember?) , but now it seemed to be impossible. The letter “Ii” grabbed “Yy” by the hand, and turned to the sun:

“Dear Sun, please, wait! Can we get a permission to live together in one house , please?” - said “Ii” and looked at the Sun with pleading eyes.

“I am afraid it is not possible”, - said the Sun. “There can only be one letter per house, and each letter has a its own unique sound”.

“ What if the two letters would share a house and share a sound?! Just like twins can look alike? Or be sisters? “ - asked “Ii’ enthusiastically. “Would that work?!”

The letter “Yy”s heard skipped a bit - could it be possible?! Could she really be able to live on the Vowel Street and be like sisters with her best friend “Ii”?  “Yy” raised her eyes and looked at the Sun in hope. “ Please”, - she whispered.

The Sun was surprised. “ You want to share your very own unique song with someone else?” - it asked the letter “Ii”.

“Yes!” - firmly said “Ii”, and squeezed “Yy” tighter by the hand.

“Well, alright then”, - agreed the Sun. “ but there will be one condition: it has to be the last house on the Vowel Street where “Yy” lives , because she is sharing it and would often need to run to the Consonant Boulevard. Do you agree?”

“Ii” and “Yy” nodded their heads happily and skipped back to their friends holding hands, just like sisters or best friends do.

And even through there were 20 houses on the Consonant Boulevard  ( Bb, Cc, Dd, Ff, Gg, Hh, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, Nn, Pp, Qq, Rr, Ss, Tt, Vv, Ww, Xx, Zz ) , each time the letters got together, they would magically align in the following order :

“Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd, Ee, Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, Ss, Tt, Uu, Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy, Zz “ "

And that is, my dear Friend, how English Alphabet looks today with its 6 vowels and 20 consonants. All together 26 letters make 26 houses in the Alphabet City, but those houses are not just ordinary homes. But what kind of homes they are I will tell you next time, my dear one!
