A very interesting article has caught my eye early Friday morning.
Adriana Velez, of the Stir , brings up to her reader’s attention the information she came across in regards to how strollers, carseats and other equipment affect your baby’s and child’s brain and development. Adriana links neuro-psychologist Sally Goddard Blythe’s speech at WATCh conference as one of her sources, and it was the statement that “too much time in a front-facing stroller can limit your baby's speech and physical development “ that had us dip our hands deeper into the information available and do our own research.
Here is what we found.
What About The Children? foundation was established in 1993 with aims that echo those expressed by UNICEF. It is a well-known fact that the first three years of life, especially the quality of the infant/mother bond shapes a child’s future out of all proportion to the rest of childhood. Since 1993 the charity, through it’s conferences and publication of research summaries, has worked to promote better public understanding about the critical nature of development in the first 30 to 36 months.
In the newest Handbook Of Early Childhood Development Research And Its Impact On Global Policy, the co-author of the handbook Dr Pia Rebello Britto, global head of ECD for UNICEF, said that “the importance of early childhood development is unquestionable ........early childhood development is at the heart of the new post-2015 development framework with targets that promise all children care, support and services which work together for the best start in life.” The Handbook pulls together international research on Early Childhood Development (ECD), and presents evidence on how to address the developmental needs of young children globally, including the most vulnerable.
It is also in latest March conference that WATCh had presented Sally Goddard Blythe MSc - the International Director of The Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology and author of a number of books on child development. - among other experts, who expressed concern in the latest research finds in regards to developmental skills of children and particularly modern stroller use.
Beautiful and stylish as they are, contemporary strollers that face the baby out and away from the parent reduce the time babies and children spend interacting with the parents, as well as hinder the ability of the child to explore the world around them freely when they are forced to remain in a certain position, while leaving parents to be unable to pick up early communication signs from their young children and particularly babies. In quote of Sally Goddard Blythe, “Attention, balance and co-ordination skills learned during the first 36 months of life support cognitive learning and have been linked to performance on SATs at school “, she further goes on to expand on the importance of the social interaction - singing , talking and even just eye-contact, which are not only helpful, but are immensely critical for physical, social and mental development in early childhood. The experts continue to worn children about the use of the modern day electronic devices as well, which we will expand on another time.
Meanwhile, also the words of June O’Sullivan - chief executive of London Early Years Foundation - are very important to focus on: ‘Wellbeing in the early years is the foundation of success at school, in making friends and relationships and for all adult life.’
It so happens, though by no accident and through thorough research of our own, as mentioned before, that we came to those very conclusions early into parenthood.
The very alarms brought up during the WATCh conference were raised by Stokke , who heavily rely on scientific research focused on child growth and development in their product designs. It was Stokke that impressed us with their thorough commitment and dedication to create products that are always in the best interest of the child, no matter the cost, and delivering exceptional results, functional, aesthetically pleasing and recognized on much higher them just consumer level.
We have shared our opinion on the use of Stokke strollers. Today we would like to address the scientific areas of the products to show why we place Stokke strollers high and above all others on the market.
*high positioning for easy parent - child interaction*
The Xplory was the foundation of all Stokke Connection line Strollers. The unique height-adjustability of the Stokke® Xplory® allows children to be raised to your level in safety and security, strengthening your bonds, promoting interactivity and encouraging all-important eye contact - while exploring the world together. Multi-level handle lowers easily to allow you to go in for a kiss or a hug at any minute you or your baby wish.
*seat comfort to ensure natural positioning , including leg support for proper physical development*
Can’t emphasize enough the importance of proper positioning when sitting. The spine of a newborn is continuing to develop for a little bit more then the first year of life making its critical changes during that time. How your baby is supported is extremely important. Stokke Xplory and Crusi seat ( the seat is the same for both models ) is provided with multi-adjustable inserts to accommodate your baby’s unique size and build from birth, should you decide to not choose a bassinet version ( using which is almost a mandatory regulation in every European mommy’s book) , then you can have your mind at peace that your baby is safely cradled in the best position developed with love and care by Stokke designers.
*enables social interaction*
Gone are the days when you need to wait out for the crowds to make some space for you and the stroller. Neither you nor your baby have to avoid restaurants, libraries and other social places besides parks. With Xplory on hand ( and any of the Stokke stroller models) , you can easily not only fit into the smallest of the coffee shops, you can easily adjust the height of the Xplory to make your child’s seat to be the best in the room. Should the baby be sleeping, by positioning the stroller close to you, it will be your face that greets the little one when he or she awakes, something that Stokke made possible with ease, allowing for parents to go on with the daily tasks without having to compromise theirs or baby’s and child’s comfort, security and connection.
*ride-on option allows for the older child to hop on and off the stroller while exploring surroundings*
Another great feature that addresses the concern brought up during the conference - ability of the child to move around freely. The riding board is not only an excellent solution for siblings close in age that need a ride-on “resting place”, it is also a great feature to add to your stroller to allow for always-ever-so-curious toddler to easily hop off the board when they wish to explore the surroundings and climb back on whenever they need to re-charge on their energy. It’s tremendously helpful addition while allowing you to remain the full seat for comfortable and restful napping on the go and eliminated the need to constantly battle with the little one that seems to never want to sit still anymore.
*bassinet created for comfort, enabling the baby remain in the proper positioning for long time durations*
Roomy and extra long , padded Crusi carry cot ensures the sense of security combined with a luxe cushioned interior comfort for baby at the same time offering optional opening for ventilation through 30% of the hood to prevent your child overheating. Crusi bassinet creates the comfortable resting place for the little spine, and newborn’s head is protected by the soft cushioning, ensuring -again - proper growth and development.
There is nothing better then seeing your baby's face close to you and him or her smiling back at you.
*high positioning and ergonomic design that allows to remain closer to the baby while retaining the ability to push with ease*
Crusi, just like Xplory, is positioned high allowing for your baby to see YOUR face first and make the eye contact on the go that words alone cannot describe. In our view, there is no better insta-mood booster then a toothless smile. And the eyes that are so unconditionally in love with you are the best cure for any “baby blues” that may hit. The new research is suggesting that the connection between the mother and the baby during the early infancy has a large impact on maternal well-being as well as sets the base for a more stable and less colic-y baby. ( great article)
* sibling seat is full size for child’s comfort and proper development*
We love that Stokke’s focus was not lost in creating the sibling solution and a full size seat was created for accommodate an older child. Although compact, it is amazingly roomy and being a regular size seat, it incorporates all Stokke sitting benefits, even for the casual rider. Unique positioning of the seat places the child higher and away from the dirt, while allowing for interaction between the siblings and does not interfere with maneuverability, something that never fails to surprise us in the best way possible.
* safety *
Although may initially seem as inconvenient, Crusi does not accept other carseats but the ones created and approved to go with Stokke Crusi. However, the reason behind it is the very important fact of the baby’s safety. Toddlers are known for curiosity. They are also known for being unpredictable. It takes only a few seconds for the toddler to pull on the visible carseat straps, but the effects of a possible injury to the baby can be lifelong, if not life threatening. When Crusi was released, Stokke redesigned the interchangeable seat looking at it from the bottom child’s point of view ensuring that there is absolutely nothing that can be potentially dangerous to either of the children while creating the seat that allows for plenty of visibility for the bottom level rider.
With higher positioning then any other compact stroller on the market, the urban compact stroller Stokke® Scoot lifts your child closer helping you explore together. Scoot is significantly higher then similar model strollers, Stokke® Scoot grows with your child being the one and only when combining the impossible and offering compact stroller conveniences with full-size stroller benefits.
“Best in Class” features in a compact stroller. Easy to fold and easy to carry away one-handed for your on the go lifestyle. The ideal solution for newborn babies, travel, navigating busy streets, narrow doorways and public transit, Scoot stays right in the same line with Xplory and Crusi and allows for close parent-child interaction and easy exploration of the surrounding world. Also, being light as it is and extremely easy to maneuver, Scoot is the perfect companion for Stokke MyCarrier and another great sibling solution for little ones close in age.
